Light of Song

Tonight was something relatively small that meant a lot. It was my student vocal recital. I sang two songs (one at the beginning and one at the end), and then they all sang. I have been pouring my heart into teaching all summer, and I’ve really figured out how to do it. I love it!

And these kids are so good! They try and they learn and they put themselves out there. Singing is really uniquely vulnerable and intimate and personal because it’s your voice. You can’t blame the tuba or the drum set or the violin. It’s your body and your words coming out. So it’s scary.

But these beautiful students kept with it and learned to open up and spin their sound and breathe correctly and perform a story in front of people. I was so surprised how emotional I felt at the end. They’ve given me a lot, and they make me feel so special for what I’ve given them. What a joy it is to sing!

I also feel like I’ve really discovered a diamond of a way to contribute to society. I can make more money faster teaching voice than just about anything else, and I know that I’m good at it, and I feel like I’m really making a difference. Plus, it always puts me in a better mood than I was before the lesson.

Hooray for singing and sweet students and the joy of music.

  1. The recital was wonderful. I especially liked the Vanilla Ice Cream song that you sang, Clarissa.
